Thyroid Disorders

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped, endocrine gland that sits at the base of the throat. It is an immensely important gland as it produces hormones that affect our entire body and can actually speed up or slow down our metabolism. Problems with the thyroid gland are fairly common and affect a large percentage of our population. Unfortunately, thyroid problems often go undiagnosed because of a lack of agreement regarding what proper thyroid hormone lab values should be.

The most common thyroid problem we encounter is called hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland isn’t producing enough thyroid hormone. This leads to a number of symptoms including weight gain, constipation, dry skin, thinning of hair, sensitivity to cold and often even depression. A number of things can affect thyroid function, but the most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s disease. This occurs when the body’s own immune system attacks the thyroid gland and in turn reduces its ability to function.

Less commonly, the thyroid gland can produce too much thyroid hormone. This condition is known as hyperthyroidism. Symptoms of this include swelling or enlargement of the eyes, swelling in the legs, increased bowel movements and/or diarrhea, racing heart or heart palpitations, excessive sweating, sensitivity to heat, nervousness and anxiety. Hyperthyroidism is also often an autoimmune condition and is then called Grave’s disease. Other problems, such as cancer, can also occur in the thyroid gland, but are much less common.

Naturopathic medicine offers a number of treatments for both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. These treatments include diet and nutrition, lifestyle factors, herbal medicine, homeopathy and prescription drugs or thyroid hormone when indicated.

Cells of the immune system either directly attack other cells in the body or they produce antibodies which then attack other cells or proteins in the body. Examples of autoimmune conditions include hashimoto’s thyroiditis (autoimmune hypothyroidism), grave’s... - read more -
