What To Expect At An Appointment

Do you remember your last doctor's appointment? Perhaps it was recently or perhaps it's been a while. How long did it take you to see the doctor? How long did you have to wait in the waiting room? When you finally did get in to see the doctor, how long did he or she visit with you?

Unfortunately, as our primary care system has been pushed towards speed and efficiency, rather than patient-centered care, it's a common occurrence to spend only 10 or 15 minutes with your doctor -- even when you're a new patient. If this has been your experience and you're looking for something different, you've come to the right place.

I, like many of my naturopathic colleagues, believe in truly patient-centered care. What does this mean? It means I'm going to take the time to listen to you and I'm going to have questions. It means I'm not only going to get a detailed history of what's currently bothering you, but I'm going to want to get to know you, not just your symptoms. While it's important to tell me that you've had a sore throat, a cough, a headache or heartburn, it's just as important to tell me what makes you happy or sad, what you enjoy in life and what you find difficult. You see, what we do in our lives, how we interact with our environment and how we talk to ourselves, in our head, all matters. The internal toxins, such as negative thoughts, can be just as damaging as the external toxins, though they may be more insidious in their effects.

But, don't get me wrong, this isn't to say that all we're going to do is talk. I'm going to do a physical exam and I'm going to order tests when appropriate. These are important tools that will help us figure out the best course of action. And when we find an appropriate direction, we're going to approach treatment as naturally as possible. I love to use food/nutrition, supplements, herbs, physical activity, naturopathic manipulation, homeopathy and even pharmaceuticals when necessary. If, however, I suggest something that doesn't work for you, we'll work around it. The beauty of naturopathic medicine is that we have lots of tools in our toolbox. So, if something isn't working for you or for your health, we'll likely have other options. What's important is that we work together. No one knows you or your body better than you. Remember that. I look forward to meeting you and working with you to enhance wellness in both our lives.

Initial Office Visit

The initial office visit is a comprehensive history and appropriate physical exam that generally lasts 90-120 minutes. To save time, please have your new patient paperwork filled out prior to your arrival and arrive 15 minutes early to complete any additional paperwork that may be needed.

Follow up Appointments

Follow up appointments usually last from 30-60 minutes. This gives us a chance to check in on the progress being made, review labs, and alter the treatment plan as needed while also having time to address additional concerns.
