What Is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine as a profession finds its origins dating back to the practitioners of nature cure in the early 19th century. From the early hydrotherapy techniques developed by Vincent Priessnitz to the father of naturopathy, Benedict Lust, to more modern contributors such as John Bastyr, naturopathic medicine has become an amalgamation of natural therapies that are guided by the 6 fundamental principles of naturopathic medicine. These principles are as follows:

Following these 6 basic principles and utilizing a whole host of treatment options, naturopathic physicians are able to treat a wide variety of maladies from acute illnesses to chronic diseases. In states where naturopathic physicians can be licensed (such as Oregon), they are able to perform the appropriate physical exams, order various lab tests and even prescribe certain pharmaceutical medications (such as antibiotics) when indicated. In treating patients, naturopaths can recommend diet and nutrition therapies/supplements, herbal medicines, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, physical medicine and IV therapy.




Herbal Medicine

Plants have been used for thousands of years by various cultures across the world to combat illness and improve health. In fact, many pharmaceutical drugs are derived from plant constituents.
